WARNING - DO NOT BUILD A HOME BEFORE READING THIS SITE!

October 3rd, 2004

Today McCreary Homes launched a slick new website. Their designer pulled out all the stops, but don't be fooled.

The advertising on the site is very subjective. It is amazing to us what he chose to include – but more importantly what he chose to leave out. McCreary was prominently displayed at the SAHBA Home Show we picketed in April. Is he preparing for the October show? If you see him at the show – ask him why pictures of our house aren't on his website. Ask SAHBA officials why they allow him to still have certified custom builder status. Does it mean certified incompetence?

Below are some of the pages of McCreary's site along with our commentary. Buyer Beware has never meant more.

Don't let the smile fool you...
This man could screw you!

Quality, Value, Elegance - Not on our build... The soft jazzy music and the pictures try to convey a classy relaxed atmosphere – not true – Wait long enough and the music will begin to irritate you – get used to it – if you use McCreary Homes irritation will be a way of life. Note that McCreary states that the photos on the website are of recent projects – again not true. Some of those pictures were shown to us in 1998 when we first met McCreary – The only pictures that are dated are no later than September of 2003 – before our website was put up. You notice there are no pictures of our house, the Collins' home, the Van Dan Elzens' nor any of the other people who had trouble with McCreary Homes. You are of course taking McCreary's word that these pictures are actually from houses McCreary built. Anything is possible...

Somewhere along the line McCreary lost sight of his commitment to build quality homes. It is amazing to us that he could tout his excellence when he destroyed our dreams. Does he have no conscience at all? His assertions of quality must be challenged. He was involved in the design phase of our build as well – he sat in on every meeting. Little did we know that it was the most we would ever see of him.

Oh Please – Let us refute "The McCreary Advantage" point by point:

  1. McCreary's reputation with subcontractors is not as enviable as he would have you believe. He had consistent problems paying the subs on our job on time and several of them called us to complain. The “high quality” work on our job was apparent in the over 200 defects cited by the registrar of contractors.

  2. “Some builders give you the line foreman, we give you the president.”

Denise McCreary is the president of McCreary Homes - Why would LJ McCreary offer you his wife? What the Hell is that all about? Is McCreary giving her away? We feel cheated - he only gave us the shaft! McCreary told us that he would be personally supervising our build, but once the contract was signed and the build started McCreary only came out three times! Coincidentally that's exactly how many times he had to come out for Registrar Of Contractors inspections. We didn't even get the line foreman - originally our build had a supervisor that came out once a week - when problems kept happening, we got a supervisor that came out three times a week - a supervisor with only 4 months of construction experience. If LJ McCreary is personally supervising every build now, it's soley because of how screwed up our build was.

  3. It takes more than “strong desire” to build a custom home. His corny appeal to emotions – join the “friends of McCreary Homes,” indicates he may already have enough enemies and needs to expand his list of friends. We were neither “happy with the process” nor “thrilled with our new home.” A strong desire doesn't take the place of competence. You can desire it all you want but if you're not actually competent, it doesn't matter.

  4. “You're talking to the guy who will be orchestrating your project.”

Our project was orchestrated alright- it was in the pit! Our project was so well supervised that neighbors told us about the drinking and pot-smoking going on at our home durring construction. Kind of explains some of those crooked walls...

  5. "BuildLinks"

All the technology in the world doesn't take the place of real competence, communication, and a hands on approach. McCreary really seems to be relying on this computer program to take the place of personal communication. A better use of technology would be a web cam installed at your construction site so you can watch him at every minute. When McCreary is using “BuildLink,” could the data he is transferring be manipulated in his favor? How would you know unless you kept a paper trail? He overcharged us consistently and you should be very leery of his accounting practices. In the final analysis, McCreary's computer utopia will not make sure your walls are straight, your billings are correct, or that the sub-contractors hired are competent. The information entered is only as good as the operator - look at our pictures - Garbage in...Garbage out.

Please note that this “article” in the Arizona Daily Star is from 1999 – and McCreary neglects to tell you that the promotional advertorial was written by Freelance Writer Loni Nannin and was paid advertising by SAHBA. SAHBA used this column to highlight a different builder each week. It is also interesting that McCreary didn't include his latest Arizona Daily Star article - the one in May of 2004 that describes our nightmare – the one he refused to be interviewed for. Isn't he equally as proud of that article?

“Find the McCreary Home of Your Dreams” – and have a nightmare for the rest of your life! Not content with just building nightmares and making a profit from it, he now wants to sell you land and houses. Perhaps word has made its way around about the quality of his homes and he needs to expand career choices. Heaven help the unsuspecting buyer.

McCreary has twelve McCreary Homeowners with testimonials on his new website. Did he get testimonials from his twelve most recent builds? No! The less than 10% of his total builds featured here are mostly from the early 1990's. Three of the twelve we were unable to determine the date of the build, one was from 1990, three from 1993, three from 1994, one from 2000 and one from 2002! It is interesting to us that most of these builds were from the 1990's - McCreary used to build a good house. Things went wrong in the late 90's and early in 2000 when McCreary got greedy by buying into the Amway pyramid scheme in an attempt to "retire early." We were unlucky to be in his clutches when his work went sour.

For such an “exclusive builder” of custom homes, LJ McCreary is now actually working out of his house with a cell phone. When we used him from 1998-2000 he at least had a nice office with a conference room (complete with granite tables), phone and receptionist.

Here's the proof from McCreary's real-estate sales site here :

His mobile phone listed here is the same number now listed as the main number for the company.

Please go ahead and contact McCreary Homes. Ask them why so many of their testimonials are from 10 years ago. Ask them why they don't tell you that the Star Advertorial is a SAHBA paid promotion. Ask them why they rely so heavily on computers. Ask them why they didn't just fix our house. Ask them why they are still building houses. Ask them how they can sleep at night.

Just don't ask them to build you a house.
