Here's our letter to the Star about yesterday's article:
To the Editor,
Thank you for telling a part of our story in “Don't get stuck with home's woes” yesterday. What happened to us was devastating but there is a larger issue here than what has happened to the few individuals mentioned in your article. The building industry is anti-consumer. SAHBA president John Shorbe is pushing both Arizona Registrar of Contractors(AROC) director Isreal Torres and the legislature for regulations that would require home owners to put up cash to make a complaint against a builder at the AROC. (See the president's statement in the May SAHBA newsletter www.sahba.org ) And SAHBA is also pursuing legislation that would allow builders to sue homeowners for “frivolous” complaints. We are outraged. Consumers should contact their legislators and SAHBA to protest these anti-consumer proposals. The consumer already has few avenues they can afford to try and get repairs. SAHBA should be more concerned with cleaning up its certified builders program and actually standing for building standards the people can trust. That would truly be a public service.
